🌿 About Scott Johnson
Listening for the Third Sound
Scott Johnson has spent more than forty years working with individuals and families through some of life’s hardest terrain. His work began in child and adolescent psychiatric care, where he learned early how deeply young people absorb the emotional atmosphere around them.
For more than two decades, he worked in hospice care—supporting children, teens, adults, and families through grief, trauma, and major life transitions. He later became Bereavement Coordinator for both child and adult programs, led traumatic-grief work at a regional hospice, served 17 years on the board of Survivors of Suicide Loss, and volunteered with the Homicide Support Project.
Another thread has run through Scott’s life just as long: a love of research, education, and making complicated information useful. His early work included medical librarianship, and throughout his career he has gathered, evaluated, and organized resources for counselors, families, and other professionals.
Those experiences have shaped the way he now approaches financial education. Financial strain is more than a problem on a balance sheet. It can affect the emotional climate of a household, the choices available to parents, and the sense of stability experienced by children.
Today, through his work with GFI, Scott helps individuals and families understand their options for life insurance, retirement strategies, and financial protection. The aim is straightforward: understand what is needed, make complicated choices clearer, and help people make informed decisions without unnecessary pressure.
He also works with new associates entering financial services. Rather than beginning only with products or sales techniques, Scott believes it is important to understand the families behind the financial questions—and why helping them become more resilient matters.
Scott’s approach is shaped by decades of pacing—in work, in life, and on the trails he ran in the late 1950s and early ’60s. He learned something simple that still guides him:
Go steady.
Go clear.
You’ll go farther.
He calls it “listening for the third sound”—the place where practical choices, personal values, and the less-obvious question underneath the first question begin to come together.
Scott lives in Southern California with his wife, Michele. He’s a father, a grandfather, a lifelong learner, and still inclined to follow an interesting trail to see where it leads.
This work is part of his legacy—and an invitation to others who want to build theirs with intention, honesty, and heart.
If you value honesty, curiosity, and learning, you’ll feel at home here.
